Two friends who used to go sailing with the late Hull businessman Matthew Good are now running for him.

Both are managing directors of Hull companies. Paul Waine heads fuel and waste oil company RE:Group and Mark Eggleston heads WJ Group, which provides components for the construction industry.

They will be joined by Richard Eggleston, managing director of Approved Pharma Solutions Ltd, of Bainton, Mark Eggleston's daughter Lucy and Driffield-based physiotherapist Sam Havler.

Dubbed Four Tortoises and a Hare, the team hopes to raise £25,000 for two charities close to their hearts at the Hull Marathon (September 18) and the Great North Run this Sunday.

Matthew Good died on the Humber Bridge half marathon in 2011, and the Matthew Good Foundation, set up in his memory, is spearheading the International Institute of Race Medicine which aims to improve safety in marathons.

Paul Waine said: “Mark and I used to compete with Matthew in Bridlington Bay and we thought that as the route of the Hull Marathon passed over the Humber Bridge, it would be a fitting way to remember him while raising money for two very worthy causes."

“Our additional fundraiser is Mark’s daughter Lucy, the hare among the tortoise, who is down for the Great North Run with her father."

The team is also running for GAIN (Guillain Barre & Associated Neuropathies), which Paul has supported since contracting this rare illness in 2008, leaving him temporarily paralysed and in hospital for 14 weeks.

Paul said: “This year marks the centenary of the first diagnosis of Guillain Barre Syndrome, an acute condition affecting the peripheral nerves.

"After months of rehabilitation I managed the London Triathlon in 2010 helped by Mark and Sam and raised more than £23,000."

He added: “For those of you that don’t know me, I will say that I don’t by any stretch of the imagination possess the physique of Mo Farah, so the Hull Marathon is going to be a big challenge to say the least.”
